Discussion: Service Account versus Local Account
Local System Account
By default, the local system account and the local administrator account have the same file privileges, but they have different functions. Services starting as the local system account will be given the computers privileges on the network (accessing other computers AS the computer, instead of as a specific user). The local system account can be assigned Permissions to files on the local server and, by default, is granted full control over all the files on the server. It cannot be added to domain user groups. This account does not recognize mapped drive letters and cannot access most UNC paths (even if the UNC path is on the local machine). When the Remote GoldMine Service is installed, this is the default user. If this user is selected as the account to run the Remote GoldMine Service, any files (including the GoldMine folder or any linked documents) that are on a UNC path will not be accessible in wMobile.
Service Account
A service account is a user account that is created with the sole purpose of providing a specific security context to a service when the service is running. As opposed to the local system account, which acts as the server itself, a service account can be given access and permissions on UNC paths on a different computer and can be assigned to user groups on a Windows Domain. A service account does not recognize mapped drive letters. A service account can be specified when installing the Remote GoldMine Service. The Remote GoldMine Service can also be reconfigured with a service account at a later time in the Services panel if an account is not available at install time.
